Biography of Matteo Gofriller and Violin for Sale
The Italian violin maker Matteo Goffriller (1659-1742) is considered one of the greatest violin makers of the Baroque period.
Born in Brixen, Tyrol (now Bressanone in Italy), it was in Venice that he settled and made his name.
Goffriller influenced and sponsored several other renowned Venetian luthiers such as Montagnana and Carlo Annibale Tononi. Internationally renowned musicians played his instruments, which continue to be sought after for their remarkable craftsmanship and sound quality as well as for their historical value.
He distinguished himself from his contemporaries by his careful workmanship and innovative designs. His violins are recognizable by a sturdy arch, a dark red or orange varnish, and a wide, flat back that give them exceptional tone and power. The violin illustrated here, made in 1700 and once played by Paul Stoeving, a renowned teacher and author, is no exception.
