Instrument repair and restoration

Free inspection

Having your instrument examined by a violin maker is offered as a free service. Such an inspection can detect problems requiring attention early, and potentially prevent the need for more extensive and expensive interventions later on.

Setup and adjustment

Correct setup is fundamental to getting the best out of your instrument. If you think that your instrument might need an adjustment our luthiers are there to listen and to help. Moreover they are constantly searching for new accessories and innovative materials that enhance the sound of instruments: carbon-fibre cello endpins, titanium fine tuners, fibre tailguts, hypoallergenic olivewood chinrests, etc. – little details that can add up to optimize your instrument’s sound potential and playing comfort.

Maintenance, repair and restoration

Many of the instruments and bows with which musicians work are important cultural artifacts and therefore deserving of our protection and guardianship. Even so, as tools of the musician’s trade they are subjected to daily wear, tear, and accidental damage, and may be further harmed at the hands of unqualified or careless restorers or repairers when such damage does occur.

At Wilder & Davis, we will treat your cherished instrument or bow with the care it merits, our mission being to preserve its physical integrity and esthetic appearance for the enjoyment of future generations. When considering an intervention, every situation is different: the approach selected will ultimately depend on the age, condition, and value of your instrument or bow and on balancing its functional, historical, and aesthetic aspects with your own needs. As a general rule however, less is more.
