Insurance letters/appraisals

Insurance letters

We write valuations of instruments and bows for insurance purposes, based on the cost of replacement with an equivalent item in a reasonable period of time.

Verbal evaluations are also offered in some cases.

Condition reports

After authenticity, the single greatest determinant of value is condition. A condition report records the physical condition of an instrument or bow at a given time. It comprises forms, diagrams and, where necessary, photos attesting to any alteration, modification or damage, together with repairs carried out. A condition report needs to be kept up to date, but once it has been established, a simple update of the file after any new examination, change in condition or repair operation is sufficient. Ideally, only qualified individuals or firms such as Wilder & Davis who have no financial stake in the item at issue should furnish condition reports.

Once produced, a condition report forms part of an instrument or bow’s official documentation.

Certificates of authenticity

Wilder & Davis does not write certificates of authenticity but is pleased to procure them at an advantageous price from the expert most qualified in the circumstances. Depending on the item’s age, country of origin, condition and status as instrument or bow, this usually involves travel to Europe or the U.S. the cost of which is partially born by the company.
